Opole University of Technology

The Opole University of Technology (OUTech) was founded in 1966. Today it is the largest academic institution in the region with a significant position and tradition, providing education in the area of technical science. The university faculties comprise of: Mechanical Engineering; Electrical Engineering, Automatic Control and Informatics; Management and Production Engineering; Civil Engineering; Education in Technology and Informatics and Physical Education and Physiotherapy. As years go by, not only the number of students of the University rises, but also of the research and didactic personnel. At present OUTech has over 11 000 student and employs more than 900 people.

OUTech is located in the city of Opole, with a population of over 130 000. The city is situated in the south-west part of Poland upon the Odra River, about 60 kilometres from the Czech Republic border. It is the capital of the Opolskie Voivoidship and the Region largest cultural, economic, academic and scientific centre. Opole is a home to two scientific-research institutes (OUTech and the University of Opole) and three colleges: College of Management and Administration, College of Foreign Languages and Medical College. It also has two theatres and a Philharmonic Hall. Educational institutions enrol a total number of about 35 000 students and create both scientific and cultural colours of the city. Opole is also the capital of Polish Song. OUTech plays an important role in the development of the Opole Region.

Our major purpose is to adjust curricula and skills for the future technical managers and engineers in order to meet the market requirements. The process of curricula restructuring at OUTech has already been initialized. This enables the creation of the development international cooperation activities on the level of faculties and departments. Planned activities define, in our cooperation, optional conditions for students to undertake recognized periods of study at partner universities, in order to enable them to extend their knowledge of the cultures of other European countries and of their academic fields of study. Therefore, many students and academic teachers participate in a number of scientific and educational programmes of an international range, i.e. the 7th Framework Programme, ERASMUS and LEONARDO DA VINCI (under the Lifelong Learning Programme), as well as Erasmus Mundus and Vulcanus in Japan projects.

Opole University of Technology co-operates with over 90 Higher Education Institutions in 22 countries. Over 600 OUTech’s students has already taken the opportunity to study abroad. The university becomes as well an important education destination for international students. Since 2001 OUTech has received over 200 international students from all over Europe. In 2007, as a result of the earlier cooperation with Beijing University of Technology, OUTech signed the agreement with HANBAN (the Office of Chinese Language Council International) establishing Confucius Institute at Opole – the centre of Poland-China Cooperation.

The OUTech offers a full range of language courses (including Polish language course for foreign students) at its Foreign Language Centre as well as the unique opportunity of Chinese Language Course at Confucius Institute. The scientific research conducted at the Opole University of Technology transcends the traditional fields of engineering, combining technical sciences with mathematical, natural, economic sciences and sports (not typical for technical university but conducted here with success). The scientific potential of our university is built by almost half a thousand research workers operating in the fields that are important for the development of both science and economy. The staff are free to choose the subject of their scientific research and to cooperate with the industry. At the same time, we continuously adjust our research profile to the European market economy.

University is registered in the European FEANI index. This has enabled graduates from OUTech to complete for the professional title of EUR ENG. The University is also the member of European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI).

I feel very lucky

I have been in Opole for almost 3 months. First of all I want to say that I was a bit stressed before I arrived to Poland. I was afraid of having some difficulties living abroad in different culture, traditions and eating different meals. But it was easier than I thought to get integrated to the life in Opole. Everyone I know (mentors, coordinators, IRO staff, other Erasmus students and also our Polish neighbours who stay in the same dormitory) are very kind and helpful to me. Now I want to extend my studies in Poland and stay for the second semester here as well. I feel very lucky and thankful that I have an opportunity to be Erasmus student in Opole. Dzi´kuj´ (Thank you) Opole University of Technology!
