University of Wroclaw

History. The University of Wrocław is the second oldest university in Poland, with a history of more than three centuries. Founded by Leopold I Habsburg the university evolved from a modest school run by Jesuits into one of the biggest academic institutions in Poland.
After World War II a group of Polish professors, formerly from Lvov (now in Ukraine), started teaching and research activities at the University of Wroclaw.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, the University of Wrocław has produced 9 Nobel Prize winners: Theodore Mommsen, Phillip Lenard, Eduard Buchner, Paul Ehrlich, Fritz Haber, Friedrich Bergius, Erwin Schrodinger, Otto Stern and Max Born. Today the University of Wrocław is the largest university in the region and teaches over 38 000 students and around 1300 doctoral students at 10 Faculties. 9000 students graduate from the University every year.
The first and foremost focus of the University of Wrocław is research. Students have numerous links with their fellow researchers from other higher education institutions in Poland and throughout the world. The success of our researchers has been recently recognized by the Polish authorities, who have significantly increased funding for both equipment and research at our University by 80% compared to previous year. The University motivates young people to be come involved in research by providing excellent mentoring programmes, good facilities and scholarship programmes for students requiring financial assistance.

Educational offer. The University offers a broad range of courses taught in Polish and English in over 70 areas of study offered by 10 Faculties: philology, history and pedagogy, social sciences, law, administration and economics, mathematics and computer science, chemistry, physics and astronomy, biotechnology, biological sciences, and earth science and environment al management. All courses have three stages, according to the EU-wide Bologna process: a three-year Bachelor program, a two-year Master program and an optional 4-year doctoral program. There is also a wide range of continuing education programs.

Assessment system. As in most countries, in Poland the national quality assessment system is part of a national strategy for improving the quality of education. Every four years the Ministry of Education evaluates Faculties of all Polish universities. In 2008 9 out of 10 of our Faculties qualified in the highest category and one was in the second highest category.

International university. University of Wrocław is an international university. It is not only because of a large number of foreign students coming to us – around 400 a year, but also because lots of our students – around 800 a year – go to European universities and to universities outside Europe. We have Partnership Agreements with about 600 universities and scientific institutions in Europe, Asia and USA. We collaborate with excellent universities with high positions in international rankings. Our university takes part in following programs: LLP Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci and ISEP (International Students Exchange Programme). University of Wroclaw is a partner in two European programs of master’s studies in English, as a part of Erasmus Mundus: Master in Global Studies and Master in MONABIPHOT (Molecular nano- and biophotonics for telecommunications and biotechnologies). The Academic Business Incubator assists students and faculty members in starting their own businesses by providing advice, organizing conferences and seminars, subsidizing selected investments and offering office space.

Genuine warmth

When I first arrived in Wrocław, I was touched by the people’s hospitality – everyone at the University went overboard to help us settle down. It was a relief to find that a comfortable number of young people speak English. The presence of so many students in the city makes you feel at home. The whole experience has been enriching and exciting for me as I understood the culture and lifestyle better, discovered a genuine warmth and friendliness in the Polish people who appear to be similar in many ways to people back home.
