The founding of the University in Olsztyn, a city with a 650-year history, was a dream come true for the many generations who had been trying to turn Olsztyn into a strong academic centre. The University combines a 50-year tradition of the University of Agriculture and Technology, a 30-year tradition of the Higher Teacher Education School and a 450-year tradition of theological education in Warmia. The University community has excellent models to follow: Nicolas Copernicus with his groundbreaking achievements in astronomy and economy, the philosophers Johann Herder and Immanuel Kant, the botanist Andrzej Helwing, the mathematician and astronomer Friedrich Bessel and Emil Boehring, a Nobel Prize laureate in medicine. The University is an autonomous institution of higher education and employs over 2 950 persons, including 1900 academic teachers, of which 500 hold the title of professor and 250 – the postdoctoral degree (doctor habilitated). 154 faculties provide education to almost 40 000 students. More than 6000 students graduate from University every year. Out of 15 Faculties, 11 enjoy full academic rights, which means that they are authorized to grant postdoctoral (doctor habilitated) and doctoral degrees. 12 Faculty Councils are entitled to confer the doctoral degree in 17 disciplines. The students are offered the possibility to acquire extensive knowledge in the following fields: Liberal Arts, Pedagogy, Theology, Law, Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, Technology, Biology, Economy and Mathematics. They can choose from among 39 or 31 majors in the system of full-time and part-time studies respectively. More than 4 000 full-time students and 2 500 part-time students graduate from the University each year. Most of the research and teaching facilities as well as student dormitories are located in the district of Olsztyn-Kortowo, which forms a university campus. The Kortowo campus has a highly developed infrastructure, including modern laboratories, lecture halls, research and recreation facilities and a housing estate – managed by the Student Aid Foundation “AK”. The campus is one of the most beautifully located academic centers in Poland. Every international student has an opportunity to attend to the Polish Language Course. You can learn basic grammar rules and useful words necessary in everyday conversation. This course is free of charge and for voluntary. Polish Language Course is divided into two groups: advanced course and elementary course. Both courses is going to start during first week of semester. Although its main role is to provide education, the University of Warmia and Mazury is also a cultural and sports center. The most popular cultural activities are: the Professor Wiktor Wawrzyczek Choir, the Folk Dance Group “Kortowo”, the Student Theater “CEZAR”, the Scuba Diving Club “Skorpena”, and the Student Photographic Agency “Jamnik”. Our students are also successful sportsmen. The men’s volleyball team AZS is currently the vice-champion of Poland. Our students have also won gold, silver and bronze medals in taekwondo, yachting and athletics in the Polish championships. The students of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn entered the 21st century with the necessary knowledge and qualifications, ready to attain the most ambitious goals and to realize their dreams. I may choose In a few months I will graduate at the Law Faculty UWM. After that I may go back to Ukraine and work at the university there or I may stay and work in Poland. There is a strong arguments for the latter: my girlfriend is Polish and besides, I really like Olsztyn – nice and quiet city. Mikołaj Waszczenko, Law student from Ukraine
