Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SWPS)

About Us – Turning Theory into Practice:
Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SWPS) is a university-level institution established in 1996. At present, it has around 12,000 students studying in three academic centres – Warsaw, Wrocław and Sopot. Its faculty of more than 900 (out of which more than 400 full-time faculty) includes internationally renowned scholars, journalists, artists and practitioners.
SWPS offers a great variety of subjects at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate level covering such major academic disciplines as: psychology (also in English), sociology, interna-tional relations, law, philosophy, cultural studies, journalism and communication, and modern languages (English, Scandinavian languages, Spanish and Arabic), as well as physiotherapy.

In addition, it is possible to undertake studies in interdisciplinary fields such as gender studies, corporate identity and translation. In line with its motto – Turning Theory into Practice, SWPS provides not only the highest academic standards but also practical knowledge and skills which do much increase its graduate employability in Poland and abroad.

Commitment to high standards, academic values and partnership:
All forms of study (full-time and part-time) are organized in conformity with standards set up by the Bologna Process (such as ECTS, the Diploma Supplement, the European Qualification Framework) and specific regulations established by the Polish body in charge of quality assurance – The State Accreditation Commission (Pafstwowa Komisja Akredytacyjna – PKA). On several occasions the PKA has confirmed the high quality of psychology, sociology and cultural study programmes and research performance at SWPS. SWPS awards doctoral degrees in psychology, cultural studies and sociology, as well as post-doctoral "habilitation" title to doctors of psychology and cultural studies.

This attention to high academic standards is combined with conditions which make SWPS a "student-friendly" establishment (also for students with disabilities) where professional training co-exists with personal development and cultural discovery, as encouraged by a variety of extra-curricular activities. Students of SWPS have an opportunity to meet Polish and international personalities of cultural, economic and political life. So it should not be surprising that SWPS's contribution to the Erasmus Program (in collaboration with more than 60 universities) received high marks when being evaluated by the European Commission. Leading Polish academic rankings have also recognized high standing occupied by SWPS among the Polish non-public higher education institutions.

SWPS is a member of such important organi-zations as the Conference of Rectors of Polish Academic Schools (KRASP) and the European University Association (EUA).

Its standing commitment to academic values has also been confirmed through signing the Magna Charta Universitatum. A large number of international agreements and joint projects demonstrates SWPS's pro-active approach to international collaboration.

The Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SWPS) offers its students the possibility of conducting part of their studies abroad. Each year over 100 students benefit from the opportunity to spend a semester or an entire academic year at one of the 60 partner institutions in Europe. The university also offers a one of its kind Transatlantic Masters Programme in Psychology in cooperation with Marshall University (USA) and Debrecen University (Hungary) and maintains exchange programmes with universities in China and Republic of Korea.

The International Student Office as well as admi-nistrative services of SWPS are ready to give any necessary advice to prospective international stu-dents and are happy to provide assistance during their studies. Incoming international students enjoy full access to all available courses. A Cultural Adaptation Workshop designed by cross-cultural psychologists facilitates the process of their adap-tation to a new cultural and academic environment. Further to that, a Polish Language Course (at basic and intermediate level) is offered free of charge.

Our facilities and prospects for expansion:
The largest campus of SWPS is located in Warsaw; it is currently at the final stage of major expansion and adaptation to the needs of students and researchers. Even if the present day buildings and facilities hardly resemble their previous function, the Warsaw campus can be described as "knowledge factory". In the past the main building used to serve as a factory of electric equipment. A considerable expansion of facilities has also been initiated at the Wrocław campus branch.

Like in any good university, there are lecture halls and research laboratories as well as libraries, among them the unique the Oriental Library. The Library deserves special mention. It has appro-ximately 15,000 scholarly books and documents (4,000 are the most recent publications written in English). Some 80 percent of this collection concerns Japan and China. With grants received from the governments and private donors from Japan, China and Republic of Korea the collection is constantly growing and quickly establishing itself as a major research centre in the field.

A strategic plan, which is now being finalized, foresees expansion of current facilities as well as creation of two new branch campuses. It also envisages development of new study programmes and an increase of courses offered in English.
So if you want to study one of the disciplines offered by SWPS you should not hesitate to contact us, visit our website and come to SWPS as many others have already done!

Unforgettable experience

I’ve been studying at SWPS for one semester now and I’m staying for the second one, even though that it wasn’t my initial plan. The range of courses available in English is wide and it’s easy to find something you are interested in. The professors represent high professional standard and are kindly willing to assist with any of difficulties. I’m also satisfied with the school facilities that provide everything you might need. And discovering the unique places in Warsaw makes the experience of studying abroad even more valuable!
