Eugeniusz Piasecki University of Physical Education in Poznan

Why University of Physical Education (AWF) in Poznan?

Firstly: Tradition. University of Physical Education is one of the oldest university-level sports schools in Poland (founded in 1919), the third in Europe after Gent and Copenhagen. The origins of the University of Physical Education derive from the tradition of the Department of school Hygiene and Theory of Physical Education at the newly created Poznaf University. The Department was the first academic centre in Poland to prepare PE specialists. On 1January 1973 the school was granted the status of the University of Physical Education. Since 1968 the University has the right to confer doctoral degrees and since 1993 the degrees of associate professor.

Secondly: Achievements. We are proud of our students: outstanding sportsmen and sports-women, Olympic athletes, winners of numerous medals. We are also proud that our University is ranked very high among Polish sports universities; as well we are proud of the potential we offer to our students. The teaching staff is there to share their knowledge of physical education, sports, physiotherapy, tourism and recreation, across three faculties using modern teaching and sports facilities.

International cooperation. AWF is a member of prestigious international organizations such as: the European University Association (EUA), Inter-national Association of Universities (IAU), International Council of Sport Sciences and Physical Education (ICSSPE) and some others. Since 1999 AWF has actively participated in the European educational programmes like CEEPUS, Socrates/Comenius and Longlife Learning Programme (LLP) Erasmus and in research programmes such as 5, 6 and 7 Framework. 35 universities from 18 European countries cooperate with AWF through bilateral agreements. Our international students are mainly within European educational programmes. They have modules to choose with courses taught in English and evaluated in ECTS. The moduls are based on proposal from incoming students (their Learning Agreement). Organizing each of subject in English depends on amount of students who are interested in it (min. 50%). Within every chosen course an Erasmus Student has the maximum of 15 class-hours of lectures (in English) and, besides that, participates in all practical classes together with Polish students.

We are very pleased with the dynamically developing foreign co-operation. An increasing number of exchange students and teachers within the frameworks of European programmes has resulted in agreements with forty European universities, our partners. In order to maintain such a varied teaching offer we need highly qualified academic and teaching staff. Our staff systematically increase their qualifications and obtain higher academic degrees.
Research, didactic and sport facilities.
AWF has a lot of well equipped didactic rooms and five accredited laboratories, as well as a computerized interesting area of research and with assistance of experienced academic teacher start preparing the first scientific presentation.

The important part of teaching programme are practical placements. They are compulsory and are realized through a variety of ways: for major physical education in schools, for major physiotherapy in hospitals and clinics, for major tourism and recreation in hotels, touristic offices and recreational centers, also abroad. To improve their practical skills and physical condition the students participate in two-week training camp in AWF's Educational Centre in Chycina at the Chycina Lake.

Sport facilities such as indoor swimming pool, gym, tennis courts, fitness club, multifunctional hall for sports games and stadium with artificial surface are open to students and athletes as well as the University Sports Association (AZS) with several sports sections. AWF is the only one university-level sports schools in Poland which offers to the students a field hockey coach specialization.
Students of AWF have to their disposal a student hostel with 600 beds.

Positive surprise

I was really nicely surprised by the attitude of the professors at the University of Physical Education in Poznan - they were really helpful and open to dialogue. Their English is excellent, so I have a great opportunity to improve my linguistic skills and get a lot of practice in speaking. Also the sport facilities, available to students, are really great. We can use gym, swimming pool, football field, racing track, health club and many others. Polish students may seem to be shy at first, but I find them very friendly. They help foreigners as much as they can.
